After a year punctuated by lockdowns and COVID restrictions, our Year 3/4 students and their teachers escaped to Camp Kangaroobie with only 14 hours notice the night before!! Kangaroobie is an adventure camp on the Great Ocean Road and allowed the students to partake in daily farming routines and promoted many of the features of our South West region. The students really relished getting ‘down and dirty’, literally, and experienced activities including running an obstacle course, feeding animals, hut building, riding in a trailer on a farm track and just 'kids being kids!' Last term's Science topic,'Feathers, Fur or Leaves', was reinforced with the 'Life and Death' game that featured role playing with students running through the bush being either herbivores, carnivores, hunters or viruses. Facilitators from the Worn Gundidj cooperative provided an Aboriginal interpretation session to give the students a greater understanding and appreciation of the traditional owners of the land on which Kangaroobie stands and included a lesson about bush tucker, throwing spears and boomerangs. Thanks Matt, Sophie and team for letting our students rebound out of lockdown with such engaging, team building exercises and our creative Year 3/4 teachers who faced real time constraints to bring this valuable camp experience to life in such a short timeframe. There aren’t many places where students can emerge from Victorian COVID lockdown number 5 to produce Camembert but our Year 8 sciences classes are doing just that with master cheesemaker, Mr Mottram! In Term 3 the classes are studying the science of cheesemaking including chemistry, food science and scientific processes as they culture their own Camembert cheese. Students learnt about the various types of cultures required to make cheese, the time and precision it takes, the types of milk used, the importance of hygiene and the unit gave students the opportunity to be involved in a real-life, hands-on science project. Apostle Whey's Full Cream Milk is being used for two big cheese making days and students will produce cheeses that have been hooped, brined and turned. Can't wait to taste this cheese! Look who just popped up in our Timboon P-12 School FB feed from July last year! Stay safe everyone, a timely remindar Our Year 5/6 students and teachers were not going to let a world wide pandemic and remote learning stop them exploring real life maths! Following on from last term’s Natural Disaster’s Science unit, we presented the classes with problems caused by the recent severe winter rains and flooding in the South West. Previously, Cooriemungle farmer Chris McKenzie, has visited our classroom to outline the destruction caused by floods in the region and showed the students the damage caused to his fences, laneways and paddocks. Today, due to remote learning restrictions, teachers shared a powerpoint presentation to introduce the topic, provided resources and established the challenge tasks during a webex session. Armed with a quotes provided by Ben Green from Nutrien Timboon, students have to work out what Chris needs to purchase and calculate the costs to replace and repair the flood damage to his farm. These applied learning opportunities based on practical maths applications are a hallmark of the TAP as they provide students occasions to develop a range of skills, experiences and understanding beyond the boundaries of text book curriculum. Looking forward to see what these students calculate, could be a big bill Chris!!! Primary students (and parents), Following on from last year’s successful TKR remote learning tasks - Welcome to our remote learning Minecraft Education challenge! If you would like to participate, your challenge is to build a magnificent garden in Minecraft Education. The garden can be as big as you like, it can be indoors, underwater, in the desert, on a mountain- you are only limited by your imagination! Remember, important things for any garden are water, sunlight and bees! There are instructions on Compass to get you started and I have attached some instructions that tell you how to download Minecraft Education onto your device (free for all students) and steps for getting started on the challenge. I have also uploaded some screenshots of my own Minecraft Education garden to give you some inspiration. Once you have completed the challenge, take a screenshot of your creation (if you know how), and send it to me in a Compass message. Just a remindar that Minecraft Club is run by Ms Hawkins and I at school every week. Can't wait to see what you create! Good luck! Ms Bouchier This term's TAP staff noticeboard serves a dual purpose. It is an introduction to the TAP for new staff describing it's original intent 9 years ago; to promote more student engagement in maths / science, provide hands on learning opportunities, improve retention rates, increase community connections and promote careers in our local region. Existing staff are also able to review the numerous lessons, topics, speakers and excursions undertaken over the last 9 years with a diverse range of topics from an apothecary to helicopter flying, embryo transfers to forensic crime scenes..... |
