The Enviro.Warriors and Kitchen Garden elective students will undertake a variety of activities around the school and in the local area to improve our biodiversity as winners of a Junior Landcare and Biodiversity grant. Stay tuned for more details. Denise Murray Beach Energy extended an invitation to our VCAL students to participate in a health and safety induction on site at the Otway gas plant at Waarre. Sue Dwyer and Trevor Van Handle hosted students on site with a safety induction before they undertook a plant tour that focused on health and safety systems and safety procedures. Thanks to Linda French for facilitating this visit as our students were very fortunate to have this expertise and experience included in their local VCAL curriculum. A flood of flannies greeted visitors to Timboon P-12 School as students and teachers flaunted their flannies as a drought awareness event and fundraiser for farmers impacted the drought. A BBQ lunch was provided by Landmark Timboon with thanks to James O’Brien, Davo, Cheryl, parents and helpers who cooked the sausages in bread that students readily purchased to raise funds. The Timboon Lions Club ran a Coins for Kids activity with Timboon P-12’s share of monies raised being directed to Aussie Helpers for drought relief. As well as learning about the impact of the drought on communities across Australia our Prep – Year 2 students celebrated all things rural with bush dancing! Students clad in flannie shirts were also entertained with music during the lunchbreak by our talented musicians. Thank you to everyone who contributed to this worthy cause with over $900 raised to support Aussie farmers. During Kids Matter Week this Friday as a TAP initiative, we will be hosting Flannie Day with the school fundraising for farmers impacted by the drought. Students are encouraged to come dressed as a farmer or wear a flannie or another article of clothing representing the beef, sheep and cropping farmers doing it tough in what is now being described as “the worst drought in 100 years”. Landmark in Timboon is donating sausages and cooking a BBQ for all students to support our fundraiser, seeking a gold coin donation in return. The Lions Club is running a ‘coin for kids’ activity and all students are encouraged to bring any loose change to donate. For more information about the day and the cause please see the Timboon P12 School newsletter on the school's website. Our Year Prep students have been investigating ‘How things grow’ and learning about what seeds need to develop. Inspired by the fairytale character Jack, in Jack and the Beanstalk, students have been conducting experiments by growing seeds in soil and cotton wool to observe the way roots develop and see which seedlings will be the strongest. Watch out for that giant!! The Year 1/ 2 class, who are learning about author’s intent and storytelling, were posed the question, ‘What would a book about George the Farmer be about?’ Students made predictions about who George was and what type of farmer he would be before watching a Landline story that introduced George and his family, and creators, Simone Kain and Ben Hood and the background to George’s creation. Some students also remembered George from the TAP’s On! 2017 PMP activity based on his book “George the Farmer plants a wheat crop”. Crikey Mate! So...what’s your guess? Thanks to the Warrnambool and District Poultry Club, who arranged for eggs to be donated to the TAP for the Year 5/6 science lessons, we have some friendly Araucanas, Isa Browns, Rhode Island Reds, Barnevelders, a Standard Light Sussex and a Silkie. As you can see, our chickens have a pretty tough life at Timboon P-12 School, lunchtime walks around the school and lots of cuddles! |
