Recently Alan Kerr of Timboon Strawberry Farm has helped us out by forming
mounds so that the lavender roots will not drown in future
winters. On Tuesday we laid irrigation pipes and spread/buried weed mat
over the 22 rows. Each row is between 20 and 22 m, so this is a big area in
total. The students worked hard all day and the result looks very professional. Now we just have to get the plants in the ground, which we hope to start this Thursday. Thanks to Debbie Dalziel for coming to assist, as well as Gabby and her two hard working VCAL students Wessel and Aidan. The following C47 and C45 students were involved: Rachel Armistead, Georgia Barnett, Olivia Bell, Cody Hibberd, Alister McConnell,
Rachel Moncrieff, Che Stone, Rebecca Dendle, Rhys Cardwell, Abby Lindquist, Brent Rees and Kaitlyn Sinclair. -October 2013

teacher candidates an opportunity to gain an insight into the innovative Timboon Agriculture Program, and to undertake a professional development activity in dairy. After intensive sessions on two farms, they saw the TAP in action at Timboon P-12 School and spent time with school staff who, supported by local dairy and
non-dairy agricultural producers, service providers and dairy manufacturers, have been delivering innovative curriculum in maths, science, business studies and food technology at secondary level, and across the curriculum in Grades 3-6.The
Timboon Agriculture Project is only just into its second year – its pilot stage was supported by a grant from the Gardiner Foundation - and its aim to eventually integrate agriculture into the curriculum in most subject areas and across all year levels is well progressed. It led to the school being short-listed for two Victorian Educational Excellence awards earlier this year.
The following week, a group of six academic researchers from the Graduate School of Education at Hiroshima University visited Timboon P-12School to learn about the TAP . - September 2013

outcomes/learning, develop a sense of pride of who we are/where we come from and improve our understandings of agriculture and its significant contribution to us as a community and a nation. As I was away I reflected, what is the TAP project? Last week we had our Year 9 maths students visit Bilyana Grazing Co to observe/weigh/track their heifers, we had local duck breeder/parent Greg Clark
visit our Year 5 students, and we had our TAP Co-ordinator Andrea Vallance organise a visit to our school some by pigs and goats (even if one of the pigs nearly got away). Yesterday we were fortunate enough to have local dairy personnel: James
Maxwell (farmer), Andy Powell (farmer), Amy Marlow (Vet) and Camille Haymes (MG Field Officer) speak to our Year 7 & 8 elective Cows Create Careers. This was all in a week’s work. On reflection I discovered this is now a part of our culture as a
school and adds value to all of the other wonderful programs offered at our school.-13th June 2013

C45 (Small Class) attended the Tower Hill Lavender farm.
Year 9/10 C45 Business Unit:
What are they doing (Task)? Visiting a Lavender farm to see first-hand how this business
operates. Why are they doing it (Learning)?
Learn how to grow lavender so we can plant it on a school plot. Focus on the business and horticulture aspects of this process.
What does it look like (Success)?
Area full of flowering lavender on our school grounds. Develop an Enterprise component to the project.- 19th May 2013
Year
9 Maths
have started a project that is linked to local business Bilyana Grazing to see how maths and technology are linked to running a business. Students are using real life data and applying their own Maths knowledge and skills to analyse the data. In their first lesson students learnt how to construct a spreadsheet with embedded formula to analyse data and graph. In the coming weeks students will host guest speaker Simon Gleeson (Bilyana Grazing) and select and track the weight gained by individual heifers over a period of approximately 102 weeks. Already students are sharing new found knowledge with their fellow students and their teacher.- 18th April 2013
IRRIGATION MATHS:
Learning Intention:
For students to realise the mathematics involved in a centre pivot irrigation system. For students to understand the mathematical concepts involved in planning for, installing and running a centre pivot irrigator.
Task:
Build a model of a centre pivot irrigator using the materials supplied. (bottle tops, straws, cardboard and other requested materials). Present a poster using the model as a basis for the mathematical calculations involved. Include on the poster a plan of the centre pivot from above – circular diagram. Include calculations for:
Scale of the model, area watered, distance travelled by each set of wheels on the pivot irrigator, speed of each set of wheels, cost of irrigator, water usage, any other applicable calculations. Present the poster using clear headings, pictures and colour.
Success:
Students will be successful if they can collaborate as a team on researching and presenting relevant calculations about centre pivot irrigators. Students will be successful if they can explain the relevant calculations on their poster.
Feedback:
Posters will be assessed by the following rubric. Each group will be interviewed about their model and poster to
ascertain each individual’s understanding of the project.
attended the Sungold Field Days. Students were encouraged to make links with the
Agriculture Industry as well as the large host of local Business that are supporting our TAP Project. Pictured on this page are our students at the Agri+ site. Agri+ has kindly donated a
sprayer to our TAP project as well as their expertise of the Agriculture industry. There were a total of 5 corrugated iron TAP Cows displayed at different Company sites to highlight our links with specific companies. - 21st February 2013
studying Certificate II in Agriculture
In 2013 we are excited to announce the opportunity to deliver a Certificate II in Agriculture at Timboon P-12 School.
The Certificate II in Agriculture course is designed to develop the knowledge and skills required of skilled personnel on farms to perform their roles safely and under direct supervision for a wide range of tasks. The program is suited to the needs of people wishing to enter the Agriculture Industry. Successful completion of this course provides career opportunities in all aspects of agricultural work and also in the agriculture service industries. This course is designed to provide
students with a skill set that can be applied to all aspects of the Agricultureand allied Industries.
Where: This certificate would be delivered every Thursday (1:30pm-3:30pm) on the School
Agriculture Precinct and potentially through workplace settings.
How: Students can access this certificate through a School Based Apprenticeship. A School
Based Apprenticeship or Traineeship (SBAT) provides Secondary School students
with the opportunity to work with an employer and complete a nationally
recognised qualification while still at school. Students must be 15 years or
above in order to have access to this program.
Further Information:
Interested students and parents are invited to attend an information session. Please register your interest with Mr.
Drew Deppeler (VET/SBA/Careers Co-ordinator) or Mr. Sean Fitzpatrick (Assistant Principal)
Ph: 55983381. 14th February 2013
Program:
Over the holidays there was some Ag drainage put in place at our Agriculture
Precinct. This will go a long way to ensure correct drainage to this area. There
was also some signage put in place to distinguish our Agriculture Learning Area.
In coming weeks further education and programs will emerge through the
curriculum relating to Agriculture. 7th February 2013
will be visiting some local enterprises/businesses to establish strong links and
develop powerful learning. If you or your business wants to know more about the project and how to get involved please contact me on PH: 5598 3381-29th
