In term two Year 8 Maths students will start their TAP project where they will use their measurement skills to answer questions about the design and operational efficiency of a large dairy property. They were provided with the opportunity to listen to guest speaker, Phil Keeagan from the Warrnambool Veterinary Group who gave an excellent talk about aspects of whole farm planning such as soil types, shed location, tracks, waterways, calf sheds, prevailing winds and a number of other important considerations that combine to make an efficient and viable dairy farm. Phil spoke of his own personal journey and accomplishments relating to the purchase of their own dairy farm and the challenges and rewards that he and his wife experienced over the years.Students were able to ask Phil questions to improve their own knowledge of whole farm planning and many were able draw on their own experience of living on a farm during discussion time. Students starting investigating the farm maps of Ocean Road Farms before investigating other farm maps, including their own! March/April 2014 |
