No wonder Dr Sara Glover from the Mitchell Institute calls this “..a world class learning experience”
Timboon community, take a bow!
The TAP is a real partnership between Timboon P-12 School & the industry & businesses around us: Prior to Tap’s On!, 267 people from outside our school have worked with us inside the school (and on lots of farms & other places) since the TAP began in mid 2012. No wonder Dr Sara Glover from the Mitchell Institute calls this “..a world class learning experience” Timboon community, take a bow! As part of their geology & science studies the Year 3 & 4 students have investigated “Beneath our feet” which examines how soils are formed & the land profiles in our region. Nerissa Lovric (Department Economic Development, Jobs, Transport & Resources) described the structure of the soil particles & students could identify different agricultural areas across the state based on land types. Nerissa invited students to be a part of World Soils Day 2016 & included their comments about the importance of soil in a video that was screened at Fed Square in Melbourne on 5th December. https://vimeo.com/148028362?utm_source=email&utm_medium=vimeo-cliptranscode-201504&utm_campaign=29220&email_id=#share After TAP’s On! students in Years Prep – 6 competed in classes during the Ag Adventures series competing tasks like a gumboot throw & relay, silage roll caber toss, an evolution game, egg & spoon relay, a tyre drag, “Quick, Call the Vet!” & a milk bottle relay. Thanks to everyone who devised games, marshalled or participated as it was a great way to conclude our TAP expo. TAP's On! was followed by the inaugural Tough Udder (Years 7-10) challenge events based on obstacles or contests in agriculture. In the Tough Udder event, students had to work in teams of 4 to complete tasks like rolling a bale of hay, pushing a ute, building a hay pyramid, binding a snake bite victim, erecting a fence, throwing silage roll cylinders, completing an AI challenge, fencing in a stray cow, crawling under netting then building a PVC pipe square, running a chook food relay, rolling a swag then swallowing a dry bickie. We even had some random parent/teacher team recruit a team at the last minute… the challenge has been laid down for next year’s event!! It's not often you see a cheese appreciation class next to an agriculture tour of the globe, opposite a felting workshop, across the oval from a lavender enterprise, next to an explanation of global trade and in the proximity of Farm Safety exhibits. That doesn't even include the ducks, sheep maths, genetics, chicken gizzards, tractor, Picasso Cow, water recycling, SAKG, careers, diseases & Dirty Science exhibits.
The annual TAP's On! curriculum expo had it all, & even more. Five hundred students from Timboon P-12 School, Simpson Primary School & Nullawarre Primary School participated in the series of peer lead workshops & displays held at Timboon on Thursday in a celebration of the exciting agriculture based curriculum being covered in the participating schools. During the formalities, Claire Franklin from WorkSafe presented the OHS Achievement award to the Year 5 TAP into Farm Safety team who acknowledged the support of Industry, teachers & students in getting their vital farm safety message across. Ed Gannon, the Editor of the Weekly Times addressed the importance of agriculture and encouraged students to be involved any way they could. |
