To introduce our Year 1/2 students to author’s intent, purpose, message, generating ideas and to investigate narratives that also include real information, we posed the question, “What types of farmers are there?” After responses that included dairy, beef, sheep and crop farmers the Year 1/2 students watched some of the George the Farmer online videos including various crop, chickpea, chicken and rock lobster farming enterprises. Classes watched an archive Landline clip to learn about the creation of the George the Farmer character after Simone Kain and Ben Hood became aware of a gap in the Australian literary landscape as there were no relevant, age appropriate books that featured regional agriculture and produce. Students also read books in the George the Farmer series and researched new content, like a vegetable orchestra! Shhhhh, we have a special guest author popping in for a Webex session with our students to discuss writing narratives, can you guess who it is? Just because COVID restrictions have meant that we cannot venture out into our community or invite them in at present, doesn’t mean we can’t remind the Timboon P-12 School staff of the wonderful community of educators that exist just beyond our school gate…Look at those potential activities! |
