The Resilient Australia Awards celebrate initiatives that build whole of community resilience to disasters and emergencies around Australia and recognise collaboration and innovative thinking across all sectors. During the 2020 Resilient Australia Awards online event, Victoria’s Emergency Management Commissioner, Andrew Crisp, joined Steve Cameron, Manager Emergency Management Victoria and Amanda Leck from Australian Institute for Disaster Resilience to announce that Timboon P-12 School’s entry ‘STEP UP!’ was the winner of the Victorian School Award. The entry focused on volunteerism in our community and recounted the evolution of the STEP UP workshops and the multi agency incident scenario at TAP’s On in November last year. During the TAP’s On! event students rotated through hands on workshops facilitated by local CFA, SES, Ambulance Victoria’s CERT/ACO and the Port Campbell Surf Life Saving Club. The culmination of the STEP UP! workshops was a multi agency incident scenario that involved the CFA, CERT, ACO and SES as they worked together to stabilize and extract a patient trapped following a car crash. The judges acknowledged the support of volunteers and the emergency services through the TAP curriculum and indicated that STEP UP was an outstanding application as it focused on how to build resilience in future generations. Once again, THANK YOU to the amazing CFA, SES, ACOs, CERTs and Port Campbell Surf Life Saving Club members who volunteered their time to make this workshop happen for our students and guests, what an amazing community we live in!
